Protest camp moves into empty offices – This is Plymouth
From ‘This is Plymouth‘:
“ANTI-CAPITALIST protesters camped out in the city centre for weeks have now taken over an empty office building.
Occupy Plymouth set up a tented protest site at the Jigsaw Garden near Drake Circus Shopping Centre five weeks ago as they joined global demonstrations against economic inequality.
OCCUPATION: Occupy Plymouth move into the former JobCentre building in Bretonside
But yesterday the group was dismantling the camp after occupying the former JobCentre building in Buckwell Street near Bretonside Bus Station.
“This move to Buckwell House will not only help us to commit to the community but to continue to campaign against unsustainable capitalist economics,” said Mark, the group’s media spokesman, adding that the main reason for the move was to give the protesters greater options for community-based projects.
Although he would not be drawn on how members entered the building, Mark said it was a ‘lawful entry’. The protestors have also put copies of section six of the Criminal Justice Act – also known as ‘squatters rights’ – in the building’s windows.
Since setting up home in the empty premises, protesters have adorned some of the large windows with Occupy Plymouth posters and said they hope to use the site as a platform for their cause.
“We at Occupy Plymouth will now be using Buckwell House as a sustainable environment for community based projects,” said Mark. “Hosting guest speakers and a gallery space for local artists and most importantly a platform to facilitate intelligent and creative debate.”
Dismantling of the Jigsaw Garden site was carried out yesterday with tents, campaign posters and supplies all being motored over to the new venue.
Clint Jones, city centre manager, said he understands that the Occupy group have funds set aside to revamp the Jigsaw Garden.
“We would like to thank the people of Plymouth for all their support during our time at the Jigsaw Garden and wish to reassure them that plans are in place to restore the area to its former glory as soon as possible,” said Mark, adding that people can keep up to date with the movement via Facebook and Twitter.
“We hope you will continue to support our occupation as we settle in to our new home. We are the 99 per cent, join us.”
No one from Jones Lang LaSalle, marketing agent for the property, were unavailable for comment.”
