Google and the Chamber of Commerce
During the SOPA fight, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce was the mouthpiece for the entertainment industry on Capitol Hill. Google continues to lend its brand and credibility to the Chamber — but if Google leaves, it will deal the Chamber a huge PR blow. That’s why SumOfUs, a grassroots consumer movement, is teaming up with Demand Progress to get Google to “divorce” the Chamber.
Just like in any bad relationship, it’s up to Google’s friends to intervene.
It’s not just SOPA — the Chamber basically serves as a lobbying firm for noxious industries like banks and oil companies, but with the veneer of a business association. With Apple and Yahoo already gone, Google is the most prominent tech company still in the Chamber — thus allowing the Chamber to claim that it represents all American business, not just the dinosaur economy. Getting them out could help change the game in Washington.
Thanks,
